UE pressure switches have been certified to meet the European PRESSURE EQUIPMENT DIRECTIVE (PED)97/23/EC, May 29, 1997, that requires compliance for products shipped after May 28, 2002. We have been audited by the notifying body, TUV, I.D.#0036, for Category IV, Module H1, “Safety Pressure Switches and Limiter Systems”, applying to all pressure switches shipped to Europe, for ranges above 0,5 bar (7.5 psi).

There are four (4) conformity assessment categories within PED: Category I encompasses “Sound Engineering Practice (SEP) and meets the essential requirements given in Annex I of the Directive. Category I applications are primarily for non-safety-related operations, and may carry UE’s self-declaration. Category IV carries an approved notified body certification (TUV) and requires not only SEP and assurance to meeting essential requirements in Annex I of the Directive, but also an over-pressure test during manufacturing, materials trace-ability and certification, mandatory pressure units in bar on the nameplate, and retention of order records for ten (10) years at UE.

Customers in Europe, and customers who ship equipment to Europe, may require Category IV if their applications for pressure ranges above 0,5 bar fall within the following scope:

“Pressure Equipment means vessels, piping, safety accessories and pressure accessories. Safety Accessories means devices designed to protect pressure equipment against allowable limits being exceeded” and include: “limiting devices, which either activate the means for correction or provide for shutdown and lockout, such as pressure switches and safety related measurement control and regulation devices”.

Customers requiring Category IV should request UE Option Code M407. The testing and certification will be conducted, the nameplate will show pressure units in bar, the notifying body #CE0036 will appear on the nameplate, documentation will be established, and records retained for a period of ten (10) years.
